Kere museum

The museum was opened in July 1997 and named after the goddess Kere, the Samnite name of the goddess of the earth and fertility who was thought to have taught men the secret of the cultivation of the fields.

The first results were exciting in the years 1999/2000, and the founder Professor Augusto Russo obtained funding from the LAG Montemaggiore for the hygienic and functional adaptation of the environments, but following the collapse of the roof with the consequent deterioration of the objects that are preserved, in October 2012 the surviving material was moved to the Palazzo Mazziotti.

There is a lot of material collected and surveyed: wooden plows, iron, sickles, rakes, saws, measures for wheat and oil, presses, containers for wheat, wine and oil, cupboards, carts, mowers, baskets, carpenters’ tools, shoemakers, garment makers, everyday objects.

After years of sad vicissitudes that have also seen a downsizing of the heritage of the Museum itself, it has found its seat in Palazzo Mazziotti. The material was distributed in three rooms on the ground floor without a rigid sectorial scan in front of the previous set-up that occupied 15 halls at the Clarisse parlor in via G.G. d’Ettore.

The exhibition aims to disseminate to young people and future generations what were the rhythms of life of the past, production systems related to agricultural life, legends and local traditions, to make known the history of farmers and the popular classes of the Caiatino, uses and customs of a time now overwhelmed by progress.
