The castle

The castle of Caiazzo dominates the wide valley of the Middle Volturno and the historical center of the city. It has a quadrangular shape and has at its corners three round towers built of limestone resting directly on the rock and a square tower in the fourth northeast cornerInside there is a small church called Santa Maria a Castello, built by Count Roberto in 1116. We find an elongated rectangular body ending with a terrace that allows access to a large tower, known as the tower of Lucrezia, because it was one of the places where King Alfonso of Aragon preferred to stay with his favorite Lucrezia d’Alagno. The Castle owes its foundation to the Lombards ( Landone Matico second Count of Capua). However, it is the result of extensions made by Swabians, Angevins and Aragoneses.
